For people who want to get wordy

Gemini-Plus theme

Gemini-Plus started out in life as a project to update the original Gemini theme by Root and Jennifer Ledbetter to use widgets. Then an options page was added to easily switch between colour schemes. And then some more options were added. And then some more…

The theme now has 11 different styles, which can be selected from an options page. Header image, background, font colours and various other things can also be configured from the options page. You can almost design your own theme without having to edit any Wordpress files.

See the Gemini-Plus demo site for a demo and screenshots.

Download Instructions:

  • Download the zip file (link at bottom of page), extract it and upload it into the /wp-content/themes directory of your WordPress blog.
  • Go to the Presentation page in the WordPress control panel and activate the theme.
  • Click on Sidebar Widgets in the menu and flavour to taste.
  • Click on Gemini-Plus in the menu to get to the Options page - you can select different looks for the theme here or configure your own settings and then click ‘Store Options’. You can see a preview of what the theme will look like in the Preview window at the bottom of the Options page.

To set your own header graphic.

  • First, you need to have a suitable graphic, such as a photo cropped and resized to suit. A width of 780px probably works best, but it can be wider or narrower than that if you wish. If it’s wider you will probably need to increase the overall width of the theme - the very last option on the options page othwerwise not all the graphic will display.
  • Next you need to upload your graphic somewhere where it will be accessible on the internet. If you have a Flickr account or similar you can upload it there - you will need to know the exact URL of the graphic file.

Or upload it to your Wordpress blog like this:

  • Go to the ‘Write’ page of the Wordpress Dashboard.
  • Just beneath the Save and Continue Editing button click Upload, click Browse, select the image file and click Upload.
  • Click on the image preview, click ‘Using thumbnail’ so that it says ‘Using Original’ and click ‘Send to Editor’
  • The image will appear in the post window - right click on it and select ‘Copy Image Location’
  • You can then exit the ‘Write Post’ page - there is no need to publish or save the post.
  • Go to Presentation/Gemini-Plus and paste the URL you just copied into the ‘URL of header’ field in the options page.

Bugs
This theme has a number of options which are quite complicated to program and there may very well be some bugs that need ironing out. Please report bugs to info at wordyblog dot com.

New features
If there are any new features you think would be good for the theme, such as additional options please feel free to suggest them. It’s quite likely that time will need to be spent ironing out bugs before any new features are added, though.

Header photos
The header photos supplied with the theme are all copyright Roger Harrison of WordyBlog. You are free to use them in the theme provided the copyright notice in the footer remains intact.

Hello.

Is the link on the page the most current version? When I install it, it shows the version as 1.00, and the new purple theme isnt included.

I was trying to upgrade, as 1.01 wont allow me to add additional link categories.

Thanks!

Jesse, yes, you’re quite right, there was a mistake with the link - sorry about that. It’s been corrected now.

Are you using a widget to display your link categories in your sidebar? If so, try the Link Block Widget.

Walt, I’m not sure what you mean by ‘remove the bullets’. If you have selected the option on the admin page not to have graphic bullet points you shouldn’t have any bullet points at all in the sidebar. If you are getting bullet points could you let me have a URL so I can see what’s happening?

Here you go.. It’s a mess right now.. Love the templates but I just can’t seem to get rid of the bullet points.. I’ve gone through both the style-bales.css and the style.css. Help? :)

You know what I just noticed. In firefox. Everything is aligned to the left. It all looks fine in explorer.

Not sure what it looks like in Netscape or Opera yet.

Any idea on how I could fix this?
Thanks!

Altoyes, sorry for the delay in responding - glad you figured it out! There should be a widget included in the widgets plugin that enables you to put meta details in the sidebar. I don’t actually find it that useful so it’s not in the sidebar by default, but you can, of course, add it as a widget.

Xavier, if you’re using widgets then you can just use the Search widget (which I think is included in the basic widgets plugin).

Hi Roger,

I’m using Gemini for our blog and we era very happy to have choosen it. The basic widgets plugin is working fine and the side bar is as we wish. Thanks.

Now I only need to know if is it possible to exclude the side bar in one specific page (ejem. http://www.tecnomatrix.com/blog/libros-y-revistas/). The side bar is steping on the Amazon frame.

Best regards and thanks in advance

I want my blog header title to be in the upper left corner, how can I do that? I can see an option for the theme to have the header title on the left side, but it is still in the middle, no at the top.

Any ideas?

Xavier, it’s not possible to exclude the sidebar from one page without delving into the code. You might want to try the latest version of the theme, though, because it has a wider area for the contents and you might find that it’s enough not to interfere with the Amazon frame.

Gregory, there was a bug in version 1.00 of the theme regarding the header - download the latest version in which the bug is fixed.

I am using the latest version. I actually figured it out. I made a change in the styles-bales.css file:

h1 { padding: 150px 5px 5px 5px;

to

h1 { padding: 5px 5px 5px 5px;

Hi -

We’re using a hacked up version of Gemini Plus at http://www.ALifeLessConvenient.com. It has been working well in IE 6 and Firefox 1.5 but when you view the site in Firefox 2.0, it is ignoring tables etc.

Has anyone got a fix for this? The original gemini plus theme that we hacked up was Bales.

Thank you!

Fantastic theme, very clean and I love the options palette. A great innovation.

I would find a ’site admin’ link very useful but there is obviously a work around.

Thanks and Happy Christmas,

I love the Gemini-Plus theme - it makes my site look so much more professional - however - is there a way to hide the subpages (child pages) in the sidebar list? I’ve used this code in the sidebar.php section:

‘ . __(’Pages’) . ‘’ ); ?>

But, it’s not working. Any ideas? I just can’t have a list that long. I tried using the horizontal navigation bar, but the font was too large and I couldn’t edit it.

Thanks for any help.

Hi –love the theme! I have the same question as Margie (above) — how do I hide created pages from horizontal and side navigation?

I’m not a php wiz, so please take it step-by-step in explaining that trick. Thanks so much.

Been using your theme for a while now on our Pagan Moot site and love it - just upgraded to 2.1 Wordpress and the latest version of the theme but there seem to be some issues - have you tested it against a 2.1 wordpress ?

I very much like your Gemini Plus theme. It looks very nice. Under wordpress 2.04 I hacked the sidebar menu to offer an admin entry. However after installing Wordpress 2.1 I have the following problems:
1. All my links disappear from the sidebar menu.
2. On the backend, the text formating options of wordpress are not available.
How could I resolve these problems?

Hi

I’m using the Bales scheme with no header image, and every time I am unable to adjust either the height of the width of the header. I am able to adjust the overall width, but then I lose my title and tagline text in the header (and I’m not hiding header text).

Your help would be most appreciated.

Hi Roger,

I’m taking a look at your Gemini-Plus theme to install it for a blog, but I see it doesn’t have page templates. Am I missing something? Is there a way to activate them?

Thanks

Hi,
I really appreciate the great work that you have done in taking my theme - Gemini - and Jennifer’s styling - and bringing it up to date and just pushing it out a bit further. I would certainly really appreciate some credit and a link. :) Thanks

Hi Root,
When I did the first version of Gemini-Plus I did actually include the link to your site that Jennifer included in the original Gemini theme (http://atthe404.com) until I realised that the link didn’t actually go anywhere. But I’ll gladly include a credit and revised link in the theme.

I am wanting to use a header image that is 900px wide in a theme that has been set to 900px wide. Unfortuntately when I set the header width to 900px in the options, the top right hand side edge gets cut off. It seems to only handle header widths up to 78-px. Is there a way around this? Thanks, Ben
